About the department

The Department of Gastrosurgical Research and Education is part of the Institute of Clinical Sciences at the Sahlgrenska Academy, and of the Surgery Division at the Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg.
The combination of a university and a health care organisation can be confusing and in daily terms, therefore, the term Gastro-research is used for the academic part and Gastlab for the hospital-section.

Short History
The research activity "Gastlab" was established in the late 1960s by Lars Olbe and employees at the Surgical Clinic / Department II at Sahlgrenska Hospital. At that time surgical research focussed mainly on chronic peptic ulcer disease and the regulation of the stomach acid production. A very successful research made possible to phase out peptic ulcer surgery and today Gastlab's activities mainly focus on gastrointestinal surgery directed at obesity and metabolic morbidity diseases

Our research in the field today goes all the way from preclinical to clinical research with a focus on upper gastrointestinal treatment and includes several different specialties in both the medical and surgical field. Both organ-specific diagnoses and more general conditions are being investigated. Research on the gastrointestinal system's aggressive digestive factors (gastric acid, bile and pancreatic enzymes) is still ongoing, but today related to cancer development.
